An alarm was sounded on Monday afternoon in the LEM 0 lifeguard zone, across from the Limassol Zoo, when two young swimmers were in danger of being swept away by strong currents.
According to a post by the Limassol Lifeguard Unit, the incident occurred at 4:15 p.m. when an 18-year-old couple of African descent, while swimming in the supervised area, attempted to retrieve a ball that had slipped away from them.
However, as they tried to reach it, the strong winds and currents in the area swept them out into deep water, putting them in immediate danger of drowning.
The two lifeguards at the LEM 0 tower immediately recognized the danger and rushed to the scene without delay with the rescue board. One of the two safely lifted both individuals onto the board and began towing them toward the shore.
However, due to the adverse conditions, the second lifeguard immediately joined in, so that both could work together to pull the board out to sea, ensuring the swimmers were brought ashore as quickly and safely as possible.
After they were rescued, the two individuals were found to be in good health and did not require further medical or hospital care.
