A family tragedy occurred on Monday afternoon in the Tsigli neighborhood of Izmir, when a 56-year-old woman and her 4-year-old grandson were found dead, while firefighters were extinguishing a fire that broke out in the single-family home where they lived.
According to reports, when the fire broke out, 56-year-old Rezan Korkmaz initially managed to get her 2-year-old grandson, Mert, out of the house. She then returned into the flames to save her other grandson, 4-year-old Yigit.
The woman was unable to escape the burning house a second time. Her body was found lying on top of the lifeless body of the young child, whom she appears to have tried to shield with her own body.
The fire at the single-family home
The fire broke out around 5:30 p.m. on Monday in a single-story house in the Tsigli neighborhood of the Izmir province.
Neighbors who saw smoke coming from the house alerted the authorities, and firefighters, ambulances, and police officers rushed to the scene.
The fire was brought under control and extinguished within a short time. During the subsequent search inside the house, firefighters found Rezan Korkmaz and her grandson, Yigit Bulut Aydin, dead.
Following the on-site autopsy, the bodies of the grandmother and her grandson were transported to the morgue of the Izmir Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.
Just a few days before the 4-year-old’s birthday
Relatives of the family who arrived at the scene as soon as they heard about the fire were devastated. As it was reported, 4-year-old Yigit Bulut Aydin was set to celebrate his birthday on August 23.
The child’s mother, 32-year-old Kantriye Aydin, had moved with her two children to her parents’ home, as her husband had gone abroad to work.
She saved the 2-year-old and went back for Yigit
According to reports that emerged after the tragedy, when the fire broke out, Rezan Korkmaz picked up her youngest grandson, 2-year-old Mert Aydin, and managed to get him out of the house.
Immediately afterward, however, she returned to the burning building to save 4-year-old Yigit, who had remained inside. The body of the 56-year-old woman was found lying on top of her grandson’s, with the woman having shielded the child with her own body.
The grandfather escaped by jumping out the window
During the fire, part of the house’s roof collapsed. The family’s grandfather, 59-year-old Bayram Korkmaz, managed to escape by jumping out a window. He suffered burns to his hands and back and was taken to the hospital. After receiving the necessary first aid and completing his treatment, he was discharged.
The autopsies of Rezan Korkmaz and 4-year-old Yigit have been completed, and their remains were handed over to their relatives today.
The authorities’ investigation to determine the exact causes of the fire is ongoing.
