The body of a person whose identity is unknown at this time was found inside a passenger car, during efforts to extinguish a fire that broke out in low vegetation between the areas of Imeros Pefkos and Etos Steko in Spata, Attica, today, August 11, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., and the fire was contained shortly after 4:00 p.m.
According to reports, the leading theory under investigation is that the fire started in a passenger car and spread, resulting in the driver’s death.
A total of 115 firefighters, including 2 ground crews, 30 vehicles, while two airplanes and three helicopters conducted aerial water drops; an alert was also sent via 112 to citizens, urging them to remain on alert.
Reinforcements arrived quickly, and operations were carried out by 121 firefighters, including 2 ground teams from the 1st EMODE, volunteers, and 36 vehicles, (including 23 firefighters with 5 vehicles from Romania and 18 firefighters with 3 vehicles from France, who are in our country as part of the pre-positioning program European Firefighters program), while 5 aircraft were deployed and operated periodically for aerial firefighting.
The Municipality of Spata assisted in the operation with water tankers. The fire was contained within 30 minutes, and final efforts are underway to extinguish it.
Officers from the Fire Department’s Eastern Attica Arson Investigation Unit, as well as police officers, are heading to the scene to investigate the incident.
