"I killed her": He confessed 39 years after the murder of a 20-year-old mother in the U.S.

The article he read that led him to reveal the truth

For nearly four decades, the murder of 20-year-old Melissa Taylor Ellison in Florida remained unsolved. The young woman was found dead in her bedroom in December 1987, while her 13-month-old daughter was found crying in the living room.

The case took a new turn on July 8, when a 70-year-old man from Middleburg, Florida, contacted the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and stated that he wanted to provide information about an old unsolved casecase.

According to CNN, Gary Glovats reportedly told authorities that he wanted to “set the record straight” regarding the death of Melissa Ellison. According to the arrest report, he admitted to striking the 20-year-old with a piece of wood after breaking into her home in search of money.

The 70-year-old told detectives with the Jacksonville Cold Case Unit that last March he read an article about the murder and realized then, as he claimed, that he was responsible for her death.

He has been charged with second-degree murder and armed burglary with assault or use of force. He is being held without bail at Divall County Jail, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.

The 1987 Murder

Melissa Ellison, whom relatives and friends called Missy, was found dead in her bedroom on December 28, 1987, by two of her roommates.

The autopsy revealed that her death was caused by a severe head injury, and the case was classified as a homicide. Despite the investigations that followed, no arrests were made at the time in connection with the murder.

According to what Glovats reportedly told police, he had entered the house looking for money or items he could sell to buy drugs. At the time, he was living less than one kilometer from the 20-year-old’s home.

In fact, on the very same day that Ellison was found dead, Glovats had been arrested as a suspect in a separate burglary case.

The man, who was 31 at the time, reportedly said that he entered the house through a window and went straight to the bedroom. There he found Melissa lying in bed with her young daughter, Casey.

As he told the police, he picked up a piece of wood he found inside the house and struck the 20-year-old once on the head. He then took the child out of bed, left her on the living room couch, and returned to the bedroom to search for money under the mattress.

Investigators noted that during his testimony, the 70-year-old described details from the crime scene that had not been made public and were not included in the article he had read.

When asked why he decided to confess so many years later, he reportedly replied that until he read that particular article, he did not know that the woman had died from the blow.

Her daughter was just 13 months old

Casey Ellison, who was just 13 months old when her mother was murdered, was the first relative the police contacted after Glovatz’s arrest.

For years, as she describes, she tried to suppress her feelings about her mother’s murder. About 25 years after the crime, when her own daughter reached the age she had been when she lost her mother, she began to see what had happened in a different light.

“I realized that this was little Casey. I was seeing myself,” she said.

They spent nearly four decades searching for answers

The family continued to search for clues in the case for years. Melissa’s parents passed on every piece of information they received to the authorities, but there were no breakthroughs.

Her mother, Catherine Taylor, died in 2019 without ever learning who had killed her daughter.

A year earlier, the case had been submitted to Project: Cold Case, a nonprofit organization that supports the families of victims of unsolved murders. The organization created a dedicated page for the case, compiling the evidence the family had gathered over the years.

In January 2026, about six months before Glovats’ confession, the family joined Project: Cold Case at a press conference, making a public appeal for information.

“Someone knows exactly what happened that night. Someone remembers a detail that was never mentioned,” Casey had said at the time.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported that the publicity surrounding the case in January contributed to the investigation and that information that subsequently came to light played a role in the arrest.

“We have an arrest, not justice”

Despite the arrest after nearly 40 years, Melissa’s family says they still do not feel the case is closed.

Her two sisters say they still think of Missy every day, and her memory remains alive through her daughter, who now has three children of her own.

The family had already been planning a memorial event for Melissa before learning of the arrest. The event will take place as scheduled, with her relatives stating that they are still awaiting the conclusion of the legal proceedings.
