The Netherlands pulled off a surprise. Its soccer federation reached an agreement with Xavi, who will remain as head coach of the national team through 2030.
The Dutch, who according to yesterday’s reports had been in talks with Roberto Martínez, ultimately changed course and announced late last night that they were beginning their collaboration with ISpaniard. Xavi even made his first statements, in which he highlighted Barcelona’s connection to Dutch soccer’s greatest star, Johan Cruyff.
“It is a tremendous honor for me to take on the role of head coach of the Dutch national team. Having trained in the Barcelona youth academy and having been greatly influenced by the soccer philosophies of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, I feel a special connectionto Dutch soccer,” he noted.
