Two women who had been adopted separately about 40 years ago from the same orphanage in India and had met as children in the Netherlands, discovered decades later that they are sisters.
According to a report in the New York Post, Mina Geltink, 43, and Minal Thaisen, 44, discovered through a DNA test that they are sisters, about 30 years after they first met and four decades after they were adopted from an orphanage in India.
“When I see you, I feel like I’m coming home,” Mina said emotionally to her sister during their reunion on Tuesday in the Netherlands. “For years, I felt a void in my heart. It’s as if the missing piece of the puzzle has been found,” added the 43-year-old, who is now the mother of three children.
They met as children and called each other “little sister.”
The two women were adopted about 40 years ago by different families and grew up about 160 kilometers apart in the Netherlands.
Their paths crossed for the first time in 1996, at an event for adopted children. Although they knew nothing about their shared family connection, they immediately felt a close bond with one another. People around them even commented on how much they looked alike. They treated it as a joke, calling each other “little sister” and exchanging addresses.
The two girls became good friends without knowing that they were actually sisters. Their lives then took different paths, and they “lost touch” for about 15 years.
The message that revealed the truth
Everything changed for the two women last April, when a MyHeritage DNA test showed that they were full sisters. Minal, who now lives in France with her partner and their two sons, was sitting on the couch when she received the notification with the results on her cell phone. “I couldn’t believe it,” she recalls.
At first, she hadn’t realized that the sister she’d just found was the same girl she’d bonded with nearly 30 years earlier. She looked her up on social media and, looking at her photos, realized who she was.
Minal had no information about her biological relatives. As she says, her adoptive family raised her with love, yet a feeling of loneliness lingered in her heart for years.
“We’ve been sisters all this time.”
Their first meeting after the revelation took place in the city of Sertoghenbosch in the Netherlands. The two women hugged, laughed, and cried, and they even took their first selfie together, now fully aware of the true bond that connected them.
For Minal, their story can be summed up in one sentence: “We were friends before we found out we were sisters. We were sisters all along; we just didn’t know it.”
