“Fifty-two years is a long time, but not long enough to break our spirit,” the Office of the President of the Republic of Cyprus stated in a post marking the somber anniversary of the second phase of the Turkish invasion, emphasizing that the struggle continues, with a historic duty to pass on to our children a free and reunified homeland.
“Today marks fifty-two years since that fateful day of the second phase of the barbaric Turkish invasion, which forcibly divided our homeland, placed it under occupation, displaced thousands of our compatriots, and tragically shaped its modern history and future. In violation of the ceasefire, Turkish military forces advanced to occupy Famagusta and Morphou, completing their plan to establish the Attila Line, which remains in place to this day,” the Presidency notes.

“We honor the fallen, the missing, the refugees, and those left behind; every citizen and every family who, to this day, bear the scars of war. We honor all those who fought so that we might be free.”
As the Presidency adds, their sacrifice will be vindicated through the liberation of our homeland and our people from the shackles of occupation.
“We demand the bare minimum—what every person and every people deserves and is entitled to: that all lawful citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, without exception—Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians, and Latins—to have the right to enjoy exactly the same rights as all other European citizens.”
He concludes by noting that fifty-two years is a long time, but not long enough to break our spirit. “We continue the struggle, with the historic duty to hand down to our children a free and reunified homeland.”
