Seasonal low pressure and an unstable air mass are prevailing these days, Panagiotis Mouskos, an officer with the Meteorology Department, told CNA.

Responding to a related question, Mr. Mouskos said that today we will see rain and thunderstorms in the early afternoon, mainly in mountainous areas, and possibly in some inland regions as well.

“These will be very localized phenomena, but they may be intense at their center. Today, there is a possibility of hail where the thunderstorm occurs. We’re expecting mild conditions with winds of around four or five Beaufort in the early afternoon and temperatures very close to seasonal averages,” he added.

As for the day of the Assumption, Mr. Mouskos said that tomorrow and the day after tomorrow will be similar.

“There is a possibility that during the early afternoon and early evening hours, we may see some thunderstorms, mainly in mountainous areas, and possibly inland as well.”

Meanwhile, according to the weather report from the Meteorological Department for the period from 12:00 today until 18:00 tomorrow, Saturday, this afternoon, the weather in most areas will be mostly clear with temporary increased cloud cover, however, clouds developing in the mountains and possibly in inland and eastern areas are expected to bring isolated showers and isolated thunderstorms. Hail cannot be ruled out during thunderstorms. Winds will be mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, and along the southern and eastern coasts, they will be temporarily strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be generally slightly rough.

Tonight, there will be intermittent periods of increased local cloud cover, while later and during the early morning hours, patchy fog or mist may form locally, mainly in the east. Winds will weaken and become light, blowing from the downwind direction at 3 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough in the west and calm to slightly rough along the rest of the coast. Temperatures will drop to around 23 degrees inland, around 24 along the coast, and around 20 degrees in the higher mountainous areas.

Tomorrow, there will be periods of increased local cloud cover, and after noon, developing clouds will bring isolated showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly in the mountains and inland, and possibly in some areas in the east. Hail cannot be ruled out during thunderstorms. Winds in the morning will be variable, light, 3 Beaufort, before soon shifting to southwesterly to northwesterly, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, and along the coast in the afternoon, temporarily reaching strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough in the west in the morning, while along the rest of the coast it will be calm to slightly rough; however, it will gradually become generally slightly rough by the afternoon. Temperatures will reach around 38 degrees inland, around 30 on the western coast, around 33 on the rest of the coast, and around 27 degrees in the higher mountainous areas.

On Sunday, there will be periods of increased local cloud cover, while after noon, local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected, mainly in the mountains and inland areas. Hail is expected during thunderstorms.

On Monday, the weather will be partly cloudy, and isolated showers in the west cannot be ruled out during the morning hours. After noon, however, local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected, mainly in the mountainous areas and the eastern half of the island. Hail is expected during thunderstorms. On Tuesday afternoon, local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected, mainly in the mountainous areas and inland. Hail is expected during thunderstorms.

Temperatures on Sunday will drop slightly, remaining at the same levels through Tuesday and thus hovering slightly below the seasonal average.
