La Liga 2026-27 kicks off tonight, and the title race is heating up from day one. This year’s opener has a unique twist: due to international commitments during the recent World Cup, Matchday 1 has been stretched out into a 13-day marathon, offering two weeks packed with action.
At the top, Hansi Flick’s defending champion Barcelona is aiming for a third consecutive league title. However, the task ahead will be tougher than ever. Real Madrid has made a resounding comeback, bringing José Mourinho back to the bench. The return of “The Special One” shifts the balance of power, while Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid has significantly strengthened its squad.

At the same time, the romantic side of soccer is being revived with the return of three historic teams to the top flight. Deportivo La Coruña, Racing Santander, and Málaga have left their lean years behind and promise fierce battles and scenes that evoke a bygone era.
The action kicks off tonight in Andalusia (Sevilla vs. Rayo Vallecano) and the Basque Country (Alavés vs. Getafe), while the main event will take place in late August, with Real Madrid hosting Real Sociedad and Barcelona hosting Athletic Bilbao in the post-Valverde era.
