Twelve people were killed and at least 10 were injured after a Polish bus overturned overnight on a highway in eastern Hungary, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Mátyás said in a Facebook post.
The bus veered into a ditch and overturned in the early hours of this morning near the town of Mezokeresztes in eastern Hungary, police reported, adding that the bus was heading toward the city of Nyíregyháza on the highway when the accident occurred.
The state news agency MTI reported that there were 57 passengers and two drivers on board the bus.
“A bus with Polish license plates traveling on the M3 highway toward Nyíregyháza… veered off the road, fell into a ditch, and overturned. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel,” the police stated on their website.
Twelve people were killed and several others were injured in the accident, police said, adding that the driver was arrested.
The injured were taken to the hospital.
