The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) imposed a fine of 1.32 million euros on a company that leased 132 cars declared as out of service

How the scheme was uncovered

An audit by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) of a rental car led to the uncovering of a well-orchestrated fraud scheme set up by a car rental company in Western Greece.

Using specialized digital audit applications during on-site inspections, auditors from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue discovered that the vehicle in question, although it had been reported as out of service, was leased and was in fact being driven on public roads.

This led the auditors to investigate further, where they discovered that a total of 132 of the company’s vehicles had been reported as out of service, while at the same time appearing in the Digital Vehicle Registry as leased.

It should be noted that a fine of 10,000 euros is imposed for operating a vehicle that has been declared out of service, in addition to registration fees and other applicable charges. For the 132 vehicles found to be in violation, a total fine of 1.32 million euros was imposed.

The investigation is continuing and expanding, both at this specific company and at other car rental companies throughout Greece.
