Two wildfires are currently burning on Salamis, in the Peristeria and Selinia areas, while the very strong winds blowing across the island are significantly hampering the work of the firefighting forces.
Firefighting forces have been reinforced, and 95 firefighters are now operating on site, along with five teams of foot patrols from the 1st Special Forest Operations Unit (EMODE) and 18 vehicles, as well as volunteers.
Four aircraft and three helicopters have been deployed from the air, while water tankers from the Municipality of Salamina are also assisting in the operation.
Due to the fire’s progression, a message was sent out by 112 at 2:55 p.m. to alert those in the wider area.
A few minutes later, at 3:05 p.m., a new message was issued by 112, urging those in the Peristeria and Aias Club areas to evacuate toward Aianteio.
The situation remains particularly difficult, as very strong winds are blowing in the area, while Salamina is currently at very high risk of fire, category 4.
