The Forestry Department has launched a manhunt to track down the arsonists who, in recent years, have targeted the area stretching from Akamas to the outskirts of the Paphos Forest.
SAVAS IEZEKIEL, Director of the Forestry Department: “In
an area where we’ve seen fires continue for so many years, something is clearly wrong. I have ordered an analysis of the fires over the past 10 years in the Drouseia, Prodromi–Skoulli–Lysos triangle.”
The area has become a “triangle of fire,” with five fires recently recorded in a small area stretching from Drouseia to Prodromi, while fires have been breaking out one after another in neighboring Skoulli. The last straw, however, was the double blow dealt by arsonists in Liso, which threatened not only the community itself but also the Paphos forest.
SAVAS IEZEKIEL, Director of the Forestry Department: “The
fire in Liso was two separate blazes 500 meters apart; there was a pattern.”
The Forestry Department believes the spate of fires is not coincidental and has turned to the police for assistance.
SAVVAS IEZEKIEL, Director of the Forestry Department: “
“We requested the police’s assistance because we cannot investigate everything on our own. Cameras will be installed to provide evidence.”
Savvas Ezekiel emphatically reiterated that “something is going on” in the area, calling on residents to remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, a fire broke out shortly before 3:00 p.m. in Pissouri, putting the police and fire department on alert. Traffic police closed the road for about an hour, diverting traffic to the old Limassol-Paphos road.
Significant ground forces rushed to the scene to protect individual homes, while aerial firefighting operations continued to drop water on the fire.
