Donald Trump’s remarks on the Strait of Hormuz are causing renewed tension between Washington and Tehran, with a top Iranian military official issuing a fierce threat against the U.S. president and warning that Iran has forces ready to defend the region.
Lieutenant General Amir Hatami called Trump’s comments—in which he stated that after Iran’s defeat he could declare the Strait of Hormuz “U.S. territory”—a “big mistake.”
Responding to the U.S. president’s remarks, the Iranian military leader said that anyone who threatens his country will face fierce resistance. “This is Iran, and it has defenders who will break your legs,” he reportedly said.
Khatami further claimed that U.S. forces have been “effectively expelled” from the region and that they will no longer be allowed to return to the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz. “The only way forward is for the Americans to leave the region. They have effectively been expelled and are no longer permitted to enter the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
Trump’s Statement on the Strait of Hormuz
It should be recalled that Donald Trump had stated that the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil transport, could come under U.S. control.
“Once we have completed the defeat of Iran—which is being defeated very badly—I will soon declare the Strait of Hormuz to be territory of the United States,” said the U.S. president. He claimed that the U.S. controls the strait, stating emphatically: “No ship passes through unless we want it to.”
$30,000 Reward for American Soldiers
Meanwhile, Amir Hatami announced a cash reward of $30,000 for anyone who kills or captures an American soldier.
“For every person who kills or captures and hands over an American attacker, the Islamic Republic of Iran will provide a reward equivalent to $30,000,” he said.
He added that the weapon of anyone who manages to kill an American soldier will be purchased at double its value and replaced with a new weapon, while the weapon in question will be preserved in a museum.
