As reported, at the initiative of Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Fytiris, the Menogia Center is being converted into a Temporary Detention Facility, with the aim of addressing overcrowding in police holding cells.
To this end, it is noted that the Minister convened a meeting today in his office, attended by senior police officials, the Director, and representatives of the Department of Public Works.
“During the meeting, the Minister issued instructions to immediately proceed with all necessary work and operational arrangements so that the facilities can become operational by mid-September,” the statement adds.
It should be noted that the Menogia Pre-Departure Detention Center, which is no longer used to detain foreign nationals following their transfer to the “Limnes,” will be used exclusively as a temporary detention facility for individuals in police custody.
“Overcrowding in police holding cells requires immediate and practical measures. The use of the Menogeia Center will contribute significantly to relieving overcrowding, improving conditions of temporary detention, and managing detainees more effectively,” the press release concludes.
