A student filmed and livestreamed himself shooting and killing a classmate before taking his own life at a Catholic high school today in the Philippines, authorities announced.
The incident, the second of its kind to occur inside an educational institution in two months, took place on the campus of Ateneo University in Zamboanga, which also houses a high school, in western Mindanao, about 800 kilometers south of the capital, Manila.
Police reported that a student went to the school carrying a “pistol and a rifle” and opened fire inside classrooms, killing one person, before turning the gun on himself.
“An investigation is underway (…) We are trying to determine the motive” behind the attack, police spokeswoman Sheila Chang told Agence France-Presse. According to initial reports, at least two other students were injured.
In the video, a clip of which was broadcast by the media and appears to have come from a live stream on Facebook, one can see the barrel of a gun as the student walks down a hallway before heading into a classroom and opening fire. Children in school uniforms can be seen screaming and running toward an exit. The young man’s account on the social media site has since been deactivated.
“We see that he initially fired at a teacher sitting at a desk. It appears he missed, then went to another classroom (…) where he shot another student,” said the mayor of Saboanga, Jaimer Olazo, told a local radio station.
The school, which confirmed the two deaths, had organized an armed attack drill just last month.
In June, three teenagers were killed and 20 others were wounded by gunfire inside a school in the central Philippines, in the province of Tacloban. The perpetrators were two teenagers.
Gun ownership is strictly regulated in the Southeast Asian archipelago, but there is a black market.
