Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis anticipates a delay in the completion of the construction and operation of the four new desalination plants. Appearing as a guest on the Alpha Summer show, he stated that “there is a difficulty in completing the project as we would like by 2029,” and cited “unpredictable factors that are pushing things further into the future.”
Mr. Senekis explained that local communities in the areas where the new desalination plants will be built are asking for compensatory measures to be agreed upon, while the issue of energy costs for the construction and operation of the desalination plants is still under consideration.
“To complete these preliminary processes, we will remain on track with the timelines we have set.”
When asked whether the four new desalination plants will be built simultaneously, Mr. Senekis replied that this is the government’s intention. At the same time, officials at the Ministry of Agriculture are reviewing subsidy plans for the construction of desalination units at hotels to make them more “attractive,” as there has been very little interest from tourism entrepreneurs.
“We will try to expand these plans; there is a team at the Ministry, and it is important to make them attractive.”
