The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced today that an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) exploded at a bus stop used by staff at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, killing one person and injuring several others.
The IAEA, the United Nations’ nuclear regulatory authority, in a statement posted on Platform X, also reported that the plant’s director described the incident as “the worst incident he has ever faced.”
The international organization, citing the nuclear plant director, reports that the explosion occurred around 6:00 a.m., and injured 16 people, including staff and subcontractors, with one fatality and three seriously injured.
Russian forces seized the plant—the largest in Europe, with six reactors—during the first weeks of their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and since then, each side has regularly accused the other of actions that jeopardize nuclear safety.
