The student team that participated in the 22nd International Geography Olympiad, held in Istanbul, is returning to Cyprus with two bronze medals.
The four-member Cypriot delegation set the bar high and managed to distinguish themselves among students from 50 countries.
Marina Mallis and Thanos Hatzikyriakos rose to the challenge of particularly demanding tests, drawing on their knowledge of geography, critical thinking, and skills, earning a spot on the winners’ podium.
“I’m very happy on a personal level, but also that we represented Cyprus well.”

was a great experience. I’ll also be representing Cyprus at the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics in late September. I hope it goes well there, too. It’s an experience I wish everyone could have.”

Cyprus was also represented by Melina Kyriaki Bekas and Antonis Hatzipanagis.
“I won’t pursue geography strictly, but Geography—and the things I’ve learned from it and from the Olympiad—are certainly something I’ll carry with me into my future studies, as are the relationships I’ve built with the other contestants. “We were from 50 countries.”
Antonis Hatzipanagis – Member of the Cypriot Delegation
“I’m glad I was able to come to the Olympiad; at first, I thought it would be very difficult, and it was a big challenge, but Mr. Harutiun Boyadjian at the English School helped us a lot with our preparation. He held summer classes for us, and he deserves a big thank you.”
