Nikolić: “We were one goal short—we’ll be better in the rematch”

What the Serbian player said after the draw in Bulgaria

Marko Nikolić highlighted AEK’s performance in Sofia and the 0-0 draw with Levski during the press conference following the first game of the Champions League playoffs.

The Serbian coach emphasized that AEK had what it took to come away with the win, but lacked the determination and the right finishing touch.

He also commented on the condition of the field, the electric atmosphere at “Vasil Levski Stadium,” the changes that may be made for the rematch, as well as the need for the team to maintain its momentum throughout the league season.

Here’s what he said in detail:

“It was a typical match for the Champions League playoffs. A competitive match with a wonderful atmosphere. I’d like to thank our fans who came here. The playing surface wasn’t good; the ball was bouncing erratically, and that prevented both teams from playing their best and creating better finishing chances.

We missed the opportunity to win by at least one goal. We had some good moments and chances, but our finishing wasn’t up to par. I’ll need to look into a few things, such as certain passes or instances of selfish play. We were one goal short, but even then—just as now—that wouldn’t have decided whether we advance.

In eight days, we have the rematch at home, in front of our fans. I believe we’ll be a little better, because for us, this was only our second game. We still have one more match against Heraklis, and we want to make the small improvements that are needed.”

On whether anything impressed him:

“I was a little surprised by Levski’s starting lineup and their fullbacks. It was the Levski we know—a good team. In a stadium with 39,000 fans and that kind of atmosphere, we were in control, but we lacked decisiveness. Nothing has been decided yet, and whoever is better will advance.

Both coaches will likely make some changes based on their analysis of the match. There will certainly be some tactical adjustments. For my part, it would be illogical to change anything. It makes sense to make some minor adjustments to our tactics.”

On whether European competition might affect AEK’s performance in the league and on the decision to start Zini instead of Varga:

“There’s no question about it, and there shouldn’t be. The Greek league gave us the opportunity to be here. We didn’t just fall from the sky. We won the league, and that’s why we’re here.

I respect the league. It’s tough, and this year it’s even more competitive. It may seem strange, but I value the league above any other competition. I haven’t considered postponing the upcoming match against Heraklis. Right now, we need to find our rhythm. I don’t think there’s any risk of us dropping points.

We have three outstanding forwards and a Gatsinovich who’s in top form. I’ll use them all, depending on what’s best for the team at that moment.”
