New details are coming to light about the fatal altercation that took place early Tuesday morning (August 18) in Examil of Agioi Saranta, Albania, which claimed the life of 20-year-old Portuguese tourist Luis Miguel Varela Mendes.
A 29-year-old man known as Socrates Vata was arrested in connection with the case; according to Albanian media, he is the perpetrator of the murder.
Authorities announced that the case had been solved and, in addition to the arrest of the 29-year-old, they announced a series of additional arrests of individuals being investigated for possible involvement in the altercation or for potentially aiding the alleged perpetrator’s escape.
He was hiding in the trunk of a car
Sokrat Vata was arrested in Levan, Fier, following an operation by police authorities. According to a police statement, the man was found—after a roadblock—hidden in the trunk of a car that was heading toward Tirana.
As reported by the Albanian news outlet Top-chanell.tv, two Turkish nationals were traveling in the vehicle; according to authorities, were aware of the 29-year-old’s presence and allegedly hid him in the car in order to transport him away from the area.

As part of the investigation to fully clarify the case, law enforcement authorities have taken 41 people into custody, and 11 arrests have been made so far. Meanwhile, one more man is being sought.
The timeline of the deadly clash and the cause
According to the investigation, the incident occurred in the early hours of August 18, initially at a nightclub located on the grounds of the tourist complex and then at a beachfront establishment in Examilis, where the body of the 20-year-old was found.
During a scuffle involving several people, Sokrat Vata allegedly attacked the 20-year-old Portuguese man with a sharp object, inflicting multiple wounds to his chest and back.
At the same time, according to the police, another individual is alleged to have participated in the attack, punching the 20-year-old.
It should be noted that the investigation also revealed that employees of the nightclub were involved in the altercation; they allegedly struck the 20-year-old prior to the attack with the sharp object and then left the scene.
As part of the investigation, authorities are also examining witness accounts stating that the altercation began following an incident involving a young woman. According to reports from Albanian media, the 20-year-old Portuguese man allegedly intervened in an attempt to defuse the tension, but ended up being attacked, which cost him his life.
The role of security personnel is under scrutiny
Meanwhile, authorities are examining the role of the security personnel who were in the store at the time of the incident.
According to the police, the individuals responsible for security at the premises did not intervene to prevent the altercation, which began inside the store, and did not notify the relevant authorities after the incident.
The case is now in the hands of police and prosecutorial authorities, who are continuing their investigation to fully clarify the circumstances under which the fatal brawl occurred.

He had come to the attention of the authorities before
According to the same reports, 29-year-old Socrates Vata had previously come to the attention of law enforcement.
Specifically, it is reported that on April 13, in the Kent area of Britain, Sokrat Vata allegedly failed to comply with a police order to pull over for a traffic stop, leading to a chase during which the vehicle he was driving crashed.
Ultimately, small bags of cocaine were found in the car, and the vehicle’s license plates were fake.
