José Mourinho spoke on “El Chiringuito,” giving his first official interview as Real Madrid’s head coach.
The “Special One” addressed, among other things, the case of Rodri, who came very close to joining the Madrid club but ultimately ended up at Barcelona, which announced his signing on Tuesday (August 18).
“I spoke with Rodri a few times. Real Madrid made him a very good offer. I think the relationship between Real Madrid and City is very good. His club made him a significant offer. Rodri had his doubts, and I think what happened was that his doubts made me doubt as well.
He’s an outstanding player. But I think Real Madrid is such a big club that we can’t have players who think twice about it. “But he treated us well, and I wish him all the best,” Mourinho said.
Real Madrid was the first team to make a move for Rodri, with Spanish media reporting a verbal agreement, but within a few days everything changed.
Barcelona stepped in… with Pep Guardiola as an ally, who spoke with the 2024 “Golden Ball” winner and convinced him—at least on the surface—that the “Blaugrana’s” style of play suited him better, managed to sign him after “tough” negotiations with Manchester City.
