The Republic of Cyprus remains a stabilizing force and is focusing on diplomacy, a government source told CNA.
“What matters and is absolutely clear is the role of the Republic of Cyprus. Cyprus does not threaten anyone and is not a factor in military escalation in the region. On the contrary, it has long served as a pillar of stability, security, and cooperation, and as a bridge between the European Union and the broader Middle East,” the same source continued, in the wake of a Financial Times article citing possible Iranian retaliation in the event of a new U.S. attack.
The source noted that “the Republic of Cyprus maintains open diplomatic channels with Iran as well. Within the framework of these contacts, the facts, our country’s positions, and its role are conveyed clearly and accurately.”
Our positions, he added, regarding issues concerning the British Bases are well known and have been articulated where necessary.
Moreover, he stressed, “the Republic of Cyprus itself has, for 52 years now, been suffering the consequences of a military invasion and illegal occupation by Turkey. We therefore know better than most what the use of force, aggression, and the violation of international law mean.”
“Cyprus chooses diplomacy, stability, and de-escalation. That has been and remains our role in the region,” the source concluded.
