Nicosia Holds Out Hope: Seeks Simultaneous Opening of Two Checkpoints Following the August 26 Meeting

MOEs, Convergence, and Methodology
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The methodology to be followed with the aim of resuming talks after nine years, and the confidence-building measures that will help foster a positive atmosphere, could, under certain conditions, break the deadlock in the Cyprus issue.

However, so far, there is nothing positive on the horizon, since even if a way is found to announce the new informal five-party meeting, the groundwork for a positive outcome is lacking.

Against this backdrop, the United Nations continues to document areas of convergence, which will serve as a solid foundation for the next stage, which Christodoulides and Erciyuman will in any case discuss this coming Wednesday at their first meeting since António Guterres’s visit to Cyprus.

“A positive outcome at the next meeting between the President of the Republic and Mr. Erhurman will certainly provide positive momentum.”
Konstantinos Letympiotis – Government Spokesperson

Given that Nicosia is still waiting for the Turkish Cypriot side to respond to the issue of roadblocks, which would also contribute to a positive atmosphere.

“In any case, we hope that the other side’s response at the August 26 meeting will be such that it leads to the announcement of the simultaneous opening of the two roadblocks, as presented and supported by the Secretary-General.”
Konstantinos Letympiotis – Government Spokesperson
All
of this will, of course, be discussed tomorrow during the meeting between the two negotiators, Menelaos Menelaou and Mehmet Dana.

Marine Parks

At the center of Greek-Turkish relations, however, is Ankara’s decision to designate “National Marine Parks” in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.

“We must make it clear on this issue that there is sovereignty in the region. We have a continental shelf, our own territorial waters, and an EEZ. As a land-based state, we exercise sovereignty over the region. We have the right to protect the ecosystem and monitor it.”
A Haber

A decision that once again stirred up the… seemingly calm waters of recent months and, at the same time, sparked euphoria in the Turkish press aligned with the Turkish government.

Hurriyet Newspaper

Greece, although it has a mainland territory, attempts to present itself as an island nation, like Japan and the Philippines. This is not the case. Its reaction makes no sense.
Greece will lodge a complaint regarding
this decision “at the appropriate level,” as Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Hatzivassiliou indicated today.
