A head-on collision between a bus and a truck killed at least 23 people today in the city of Ibituba, in southern Brazil, according to authorities.
“Unfortunately, 23 bus passengers lost their lives,” and four others were injured, said Via Araucaria, the highway management company in the state of Paraná, where the city is located.

According to police, the truck veered into oncoming traffic, where it collided head-on with the bus. The truck driver is among the dead.
Images from the accident scene show a bus marked for transporting people with disabilities, wrecked next to the truck on the side of the road.
The bus belonged to the health services of the municipality of Ibituba, from where it had departed to transport patients to hospitals in Curitiba, the capital of the state of Paraná.
Traffic accidents are common in Brazil, a vast country where the railway network is underdeveloped.
On Sunday, eight people lost their lives in Rio de Janeiro when the bus they were riding in overturned.
In February, a bus returning from a religious festival in the northeastern part of the country veered off the road and overturned, killing 16 people.
