Donald Trump escalated pressure on Tehran, warning of “terrible” economic consequences for any country that offers support to Iran, nearly six months after the outbreak of armed conflict in the Middle East.
In a post on Truth Social, the U.S. President announced “the most devastating economic warfare operation ever waged against any country,” citing unprecedented levels of international isolation.
The U.S. President accused the Iranian leadership of rejecting the opportunity to reach a bilateral agreement and targeted any form of direct or indirect aid to Tehran.
Specifically, he warned that the cost would be heavy for any country whose financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government agencies provide a “lifeline” to Iran. Among other things, he called for an immediate end to practices such as oil smuggling and the transfer of liquidity, currency exchanges and transactions through exchange bureaus, the use of front companies, and assistance from shipping registries
Despite the tough rhetoric, the U.S. President did not specify exactly what new measures or sanctions he intends to impose. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently took a similar line, speaking of a regime of total economic isolation for Tehran.
This new rhetoric comes at a time when military operations—which began with the U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on February 28— are showing signs of easing in intensity, though they continue to keep tensions in the region particularly high.
Analysts believe that the shift toward economic pressure and a military wait-and-see stance are linked both to domestic political discontent in the U.S. over the war and to the observed decline in critical ammunition stocks of the U.S. armed forces.
