The upward trend in new cases of West Nile virus infection continues.
Over the past week, 47 new domestic cases of West Nile virus infection were diagnosed and reported.
According to the latest update from EODY, one additional case of the infection has also been diagnosed, involving a complex travel history (including a visit to an endemic country abroad), for which the likely country of exposure remains undetermined, and which is not included in the further analysis.
In total, during the period from 2026 through August 19, 2026, thirteen (13) deaths have been recorded in patients with viral infection and central nervous system manifestations, aged over 65 (median age of deceased: 82 years, range: 66–91 years).
From the beginning of the 2026 season through August 19, 2026 (until 11:00 a.m.), a total of one hundred fifty-seven (157) domestic cases of West Nile virus infection in Greece, of which one hundred sixteen (116) cases presented with central nervous system manifestations (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis), and forty-one (41) cases had mild CNS symptoms or no CNS symptoms at all.
Most cases continue to be reported primarily in eastern Attica, but the infection is present in most regions of the country.
