The news of soccer legend Ronaldinho’s return to active play came as a complete surprise.
The Brazilian maestro last played in an official match in 2015, wearing the Fluminense jersey. However, now, 11 years later, he is ready to lace up his soccer cleats once again and step onto the field at the age of 46.
Ronaldinho is set to sign a contract with Ravenna, a team in the third division of Italian soccer; the Brazilian has already arrived in the city to formally finalize his transfer.
Ronaldinho is a shareholder in the club and has set a personal goal—though certainly for marketing reasons as well—to score the final goal of his career while playing for Ravenna. His return is expected to generate enormous interest, as he is one of the most popular and charismatic soccer players of his generation.
Ronaldinho has arrived in Italy ahead of his presentation as a new signing for third-tier Ravenna, 11 years after his retirement.
The former Ballon d’Or winner is part of Ravenna’s ownership group led by Ignazio Cipriani, a member of the luxury hotel dynasty.
