A commotion broke out around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday (August 20) in downtown Thessaloniki when a section of a first-floor balcony detached from an old building at 33 Balanou Street.
A car parked at the scene sustained property damage, but no injuries were reported. Damage was also caused to the window of a neighboring store. As soon as the loud noise was heard, people from nearby shops in the area came out onto the street to see what had happened.
Speaking to voria.gr, a man noted that they were eating at a nearby restaurant when they suddenly heard a “loud bang, like an earthquake.” As reported earlier, a woman had attempted to park at the spot where the balcony fell, but changed her mind and drove away. Three minutes later, it collapsed.”
The police are conducting a preliminary investigation.
