Iga Świątek advanced to the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open (WTA 1000)… with ease. The Polish player, ranked No. 5 in the world, advanced to the final four after Elena Rybakina (No. 2) was unable to finish their quarterfinal match. She retired in the first set while trailing 4-1, after feeling discomfort in her left heel.
Rybakina’s injury, which occurred ten days before the start of the U.S. Open, gave Swiatek the opportunity to advance to the tournament’s semifinals, where she will face the American, Jessica Pegula (No. 3), who defeated her compatriot, Amanda Anisimova (No. 10), 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4).
