Firefighters managed to prevent the worst from happening in the Paphos district.
According to Fire Department spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the fire that broke out near the community of Statou-Agios Fotios has been contained, and its spread into the community’s residential area has been prevented.
The fire was detected by a Civil Defense patrol, and forces from the Fire Department, the Forestry Department, Civil Defense, the Game and Wildlife Service, and the Atlas and Blue Heart Organized Volunteer Groups.
Aerial assets were also deployed, with six aircraft conducting periodic operations. Specifically, two that were on patrol and four others (helicopters and airplanes) that were dispatched later.
A leased bulldozer and a water tanker truck were deployed for firefighting.
According to Mr. Kettis, two firefighting helicopters and all ground forces are currently working to contain and fully extinguish the fire.
The fire burned approximately three hectares of wild vegetation, grapevines, and acacia trees. Water hoses were also destroyed.
