A cyberattack by Iranian hackers shut down a power plant

Reports indicate that it is a small-scale facility
ALPHANEWSLIVE

A power plant in Britain was taken offline for four days due to a cyberattack by hackers allegedly linked to Iran, The Telegraph reported on Sunday.

The incident, according to the exposé, occurred in mid-July.

At the same time, cyberattacks were underway in the U.S. against water management infrastructure, a matter about which the White House also expressed concern.

This is the first time Iranian hackers have managed to shut down—and for such a long period—a power plant, which is typically considered critical infrastructure.

The British newspaper does not specify which facility was affected, though reports insist it was a small-scale plant, whose shutdown did not impact the power grid.

British and American intelligence agencies have repeatedly warned of the threat posed by hackers from Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, who launch daily attacks against critical national infrastructure and government agencies.

In the past, this has caused disruptions to systems in the British National Health Service, schools, and commercial and industrial facilities, including Jaguar Land Rover’s production lines.

Foreign hacker groups have also stolen customer information from retail businesses, as well as voter registries from the UK Electoral Commission.

However, no hacker appears to have ever succeeded in paralyzing the operation of a British power plant, despite warnings that attacks on national infrastructure are a common occurrence.
