Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated today that his country played no role in the sabotage, in 2022, of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, which carried Russian gas to Europe.
Last month, German prosecutors concluded that the explosions on these pipelines were carried out on the orders of the Ukrainian government, an accusation that is likely to complicate relations between Kyiv and Germany, which is one of its main military supporters.
“Ukraine has never officially participated in any operation related to the sabotage of Nord Stream,” Zelenskyy told reporters today when asked about the investigation into the matter.
The Ukrainian head of state, who has always denied any involvement by his country, added that Germany “fully realizes that Ukraine neither organized nor carried out nor even conceived of this operation.”
He clarified that Kyiv is offering Berlin its assistance in the context of these investigations and hopes that they will not harm their relations.
“It is very important for us not to lose our partnership, not to lose the trust of the European countries that have been helping Ukraine since the beginning of this war” against Russia, Zelenskyy added.
On Wednesday, a Ukrainian citizen was arrested in Croatia on suspicion of involvement in the sabotage of the gas pipeline.
It has since emerged that he was working on a film about the attack.
According to the German prosecutor’s office, this man had collaborated with another Ukrainian, who was arrested last year in Italy and subsequently extradited to Germany.
