Nea Salamina issued a statement regarding the letter it sent to Barcelona following the team’s training camp in the occupied part of Cyprus.
According to the “Red-and-Whites,” they are asking the “Blaugrana” to reconsider their position and live up to their legacy, as this move has caused deep concern and disappointment.
The statement: “NEA SALAMINA AMMOCHOSTOS, through its President, Paris Andreou, sent an official letter today to FC Barcelona, expressing its deep concern and disappointment regarding the organization of the ‘Lefkosa Camp’ in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus and the use of the term “Northern Cyprus” on the Spanish club’s official website.
In our letter, we remind them that NEA SALAMINA, a club founded in Famagusta in 1948, has remained a refugee in its own homeland for more than half a century, far from the city and its historic home.
At the same time, we are reaching out to a club with a rich history and special symbolism. FC Barcelona knows from its own journey what identity, dignity, memory, and resilience mean. It knows why “Més que un club”—“More than a club”—is not merely a slogan, but a historical responsibility.
That is why we call on it to put its own history and the values it has long championed into practice.
We ask FC Barcelona to immediately reconsider its position and cancel this camp in the occupied areas of Cyprus, as well as to withdraw any statement that could be interpreted as legitimizing an unrecognized entity.
NEA SALAMINA AMMOCHOSTOS has been and remains an association dedicated to peace, coexistence, and respect for all. Our position is not directed against any community. It is directed against the occupation, the distortion of historical truth, and any action that may contribute to the normalization of a situation that, for us, remains an open wound.
History is not merely something we remember. It is something we demonstrate through our actions.
We call on FC Barcelona to live up to its own history.
Més que un club. Now is the time to put it into practice.”
