Following the reactions from refugee organizations—and not only regarding Barcelona’s youth academy camp in the occupied territories— Karmiotissa issued a statement condemning the Catalans’ intention.
The statement: “The statements by historic refugee associations in our region regarding FC Barcelona’s plan to organize a soccer camp in the occupied territories of the Republic of Cyprus express a concern that cannot leave any of us indifferent.
Karmiotissa FC joins them in this concern.
Particular offense is caused by the reference to “Northern Cyprus” in the official presentation of this event by the Barça Academy. This is not merely an incorrect geographical reference or an unfortunate choice of terminology.
There is no “Northern Cyprus.” There is one Cyprus, part of which remains under occupation.
The Republic of Cyprus is the only internationally recognized state in Cyprus, and the reality of the ongoing occupation of part of its territory cannot be reflected through terminology that creates misleading impressions.
This is precisely why we believe that a sports organization with the international stature, history, and influence of FC Barcelona must demonstrate the corresponding care and sensitivity. Such a statement, regardless of intent, carries particular weight when it comes from an organization with a global reach.
Soccer has immense power. It can unite people, societies, and nations. Precisely for this reason, major international sports organizations must recognize the weight that comes with every decision they make and every public statement they issue.
Karmiotissa FC supports the institutional actions already taken by the Cyprus Football Association and joins its voice with the clubs that have already spoken out publicly on this matter.
With respect for history.
With respect for international law.
With respect for Cyprus.”
