The energy crisis and rising costs continue, says the Democratic Alarm in a written statement, emphasizing that a comprehensive plan for the future is needed.
The prolonged crisis in the Middle East and rising energy prices are putting even more pressure on households and businesses, it adds, which have been grappling with high prices for the past few years.

The following is the announcement detailing the package of measures proposed by DISY:
As we have repeatedly emphasized, a comprehensive plan is needed that includes both short-term and long-term measures:
- Investments in energy storage.
- The installation of more solar panels, with an emphasis on the homes of vulnerable households and small businesses.
- Upgrading the grid to accommodate more green energy.
- Completion of the major project in Vasiliko.
- Strengthening competition within the new competitive market by promoting mature renewable energy projects.
- Better public transportation, with priority given to school buses.
- The introduction of a plan to phase out old vehicles, with priority given to low-income families.
- Promoting charging infrastructure and encouraging electric vehicle adoption.
- Targeted income support for vulnerable households and families with children and students, who face a disproportionate burden.
In fact, as of January 1, 2028, transportation and heating fuels will be included in the new European emissions trading system. The additional cost reflected in final fuel prices will be very high for households and businesses. Cyprus must prepare now.
Plans must also include the Great Sea Interconnector, which will connect Cyprus to the European grid, ending the country’s energy isolation, improving the country’s security, reducing dependence on liquid fuels, and boosting competition.
This is the way forward: only through a comprehensive energy plan can the high costs borne by citizens and businesses be substantially reduced.
