Chamboulas: Then and Now—What Changing Parties and Electoral Districts Meant for Him

The member of parliament analyzes the differences and outlines his views on Limassol

From the Democratic Alarm to ELAM, and from the Famagusta electoral district to Limassol. As a guest on the Alpha Summer show, Evgenios Hamboullas discussed the differences he sees between his previous and current terms in Parliament, about three months after taking office. As he explained, in the past he had a difficult daily routine involving constant travel to all the cities and districts, because the refugee community from Famagusta is scattered throughout Cyprus. As a member of parliament representing Limassol, he has more time to devote to his parliamentary work and to focus on the problems facing the local community.

“When you say the word ‘Limassol’ today, what comes to mind is development—and the problems that accompany and plague it. A major part of that is traffic. Growth in economic indicators alone does not constitute true development. Economic indicators must be accompanied by social cohesion, education, and culture. Across Cyprus, development has not been balanced. We have sufficient economic growth, but there are issues of mindset that we need to improve.”

Mr. Hamboullas spoke of a lack of planning that causes long-standing problems and unresolved issues, such as the drafting of a Local Plan.

“We recently saw new commercial developments being approved on streets already heavily congested with traffic. The majority of residents protested, local authorities protested, but those in power made the decision and will bear the responsibility.”
