The number of West Nile virus cases continues to rise, as indicated by the latest weekly surveillance report from the Hellenic Public Health Organization (EODY).

Over the past week, 75 new domestic cases were diagnosed or reported. From the beginning of the 2026 period through August 26, 2026 (as of 11:00 a.m.), a total of two hundred thirty-two (232) domestic cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed and reported in Greece, of which one hundred sixty-five (165) cases presented with central nervous system manifestations (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis), and sixty-seven (67) cases had mild symptoms or no CNS symptoms.

In total, during the period from 2026 through August 26, 2026, nineteen (19) deaths have been recorded among patients infected with the virus who were over 65 years of age (median age of deceased: 85 years, range: 66–92 years). The highest number of new cases continues to be reported in the municipalities of eastern Attica, but it is noteworthy that cases are now being reported, albeit sporadically, across most of the country.
