The agricultural organizations PEK, EKA, Panagrotikos, Nea Agrotiki, and Euroagrotikos have issued a statement expressing their support for the proposed “Program for the Reconstruction of Cypriot Livestock Farming 2027–2038, which was submitted today to the President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides, by the special scientific team led by Stavros Malas.
“It is a fact, and clear to everyone, that the foot-and-mouth disease crisis now compels us to make radical decisions involving long-term changes for the development of the livestock sector,” the statement reads.

It adds that “following the major achievement of securing Halloumi’s designation as a PDO, it is imperative that the Republic of Cyprus move forward with a program of significant investments in sheep and goat farming and dairy farming.”
Agricultural organizations note that biosecurity, animal welfare, environmental stewardship, genetic improvement, and scientific support for producers “are among the first steps that must be taken.”
They also state that “the proposed development of organized meat producers and fattening facilities—an area where Cyprus currently lags behind—will create opportunities for growth in this sector as well.”
“This will provide the Cypriot economy with additional revenue, while livestock operations will become more sustainable,” they add.
“We call on the government, after reviewing the proposed plan, to proceed immediately with the implementation of the proposals,” the statement concludes.
