"The EU's priority remains unchanged: to achieve a comprehensive, fair, and sustainable solution for Cyprus," said European Commission spokesperson Maciej Berestecki on Thursday during a press briefing.
“The EU remains firmly committed to the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and in line with the EU’s principles, values, and legislation,” he added, noting that Brussels is “ready to play an active role in this process, using all the means and tools at its disposal.”
Beresteki was responding to a question regarding the progress of the Cyprus talks following the UN Secretary-General’s visit to the island and the meeting between the leaders of the two communities, as well as on whether restrictions on activities in the occupied areas—including the alleged cancellation of a training session for a Barcelona youth team—are consistent with confidence-building measures.
The spokesperson declined to comment on this specific meeting, reiterating the Commission’s long-standing position on the Cyprus issue. He also noted that the Commission has appointed Executive Vice President Raffaele Fito as Special Representative for Cyprus.
