Fears of new landslides and floods in Nepal; the tragic death toll and number of missing persons continue to rise

A race against time to find survivors
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The mudslide that engulfed Nepal left death and destruction in its wake, literally wiping towns and villages off the map.

The latest toll stands at a total of 362 dead in both countries—359 in Nepal and 3 in Tibet, on the other side of the border.

More than 1,300 people remain missing. About 910 of them are foreign tourists.

Specifically, in Nepal, the number of missing exceeds 800, with 650 of them being foreign tourists, while in Tibet, the number of missing is estimated at 558, 260 of whom are foreign nationals.

These numbers are constantly changing as the search and rescue efforts progress, which are hampered by the tons of mud, as well as the rugged terrain, since many areas are mountainous and inaccessible. Nepalese authorities often resort to dropping humanitarian supplies from helicopters to people who are trapped, since ground forces are still unable to reach them.

Scientists in both countries are also expressing concern about new landslides—as the mountain terrain has been altered by the major landslide — but they are primarily worried about new deadly floods. This is because the landslide blocked a riverbed with the debris it carried. A lake has now formed there, and its water level is slowly rising. There are fears that it could overflow within the next 24 hours, leading to another tragedy. That is why residents are being urged to evacuate the area.

Meanwhile, the international community is mobilizing. Eight metric tons of humanitarian aid are already being sent to the region, and among the countries preparing to send aid are—in addition to the United Nations and the European Union—the United States, India, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

A race against time to find survivors

Rescue teams are struggling to keep up with the task of recovering the dead, and many of the missing are tourists.

The disaster began when a massive glacier broke off, sweeping away everything in its path. Those who managed to survive call it a miracle.

At the site of the tragedy, on the Nepal-China border, more than 9,000 soldiers, police officers, and rescue workers are racing against time to search for survivors.

The fate of those missing remains unknown. Their loved ones are anxiously waiting for news. They give the authorities their names and wait for something—often in vain…

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is investigating the possibility that the deadly landslide was not caused by the seismic tremor recorded in the area, but by a glacier calving event.
