Olympiacos is “moving quickly” to finalize the necessary procedures to sign the players it needs before September 3 (at 12:59 a.m.), when the deadline for the European roster and the players eligible to participate in the Europa League group stage expires.
The first transfer to be finalized is that of Markus Holmgren Pedersen. The Danish right back arrived in Athens last night, as a full agreement has been reached with Torino for his transfer at 6 million euros plus 2 million in bonuses. Today he will undergo medical tests and sign a four-year contract with the Piraeus club.
Beyond that, the club’s priorities are the midfield and winger positions. Olympiacos has reached an agreement with Genoa for Morten Fredrup for a sum close to 8 million euros, but is trying to convince the 25-year-old Danish defensive midfielder to play in Greece, even though his clear priority is to play in a major league. West Ham’s Edson Alvarez is also always a possibility, but it will be difficult to sign both, as the second midfielder José Luis Medilibar wants should be more of a defensive midfielder.
The case of Rubén Vargas remains in the spotlight for the winger position, and despite the current stalemate, it’s still up in the air. After all, Sevilla has not received a better offer than the €12 million on the table, while the transfer window in Spain closes on September 2, and the Andalusian club needs the money. Alternatives remain Brian Hill and Zuriko Davitashvili. As for the rumors from Saudi Arabia regarding Daniel Podence, this does not seem to be under consideration at the moment, as other players are the priority for that position. However, nothing can be ruled out until the transfer window closes, given the Portuguese player’s relationship with the club.
