Severe weather reminiscent of… the ’70s: What the low-pressure system brings and how it will affect Cyprus

The Meteorological Service has issued an orange alert, valid for nine hours, for severe weather conditions

Severe weather is expected tomorrow, Saturday, with the Meteorological Department issuing a 9-hour orange warning. A low-pressure system from the north is expected to affect us, bringing severe weather to the country for one day.

“We will see localized rain and thunderstorms on the island—thunderstorms that will be intense, accompanied by hail, gale-force winds in many cases, with wind gusts possibly reaching 6 and 7 on the Beaufort scale.”
Andreas Chrysanthou – Meteorologist

The conditions will be particularly severe in the mountains, inland areas, the east, and the north. The warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.

“At an orange alert level, the weather is considered dangerous, and there will either be damage or situations requiring greater caution. So let’s be on our guard tomorrow. A very different color code. Dangerous weather in some areas.”
Andreas Chrysanthou – Meteorologist

Tomorrow’s weather conditions are very rare for the month of August, with the Meteorological Service having to go back more than half a century to find a similar scenario in August.

“It’s extremely rare to have such conditions in August. We have to go back to the 1970s—specifically 1970 and 1971, when there were similar conditions in August.”
Andreas Chrysanthou – Meteorologist

Along with these phenomena, the low-pressure system is expected to cause a significant drop in inland temperatures, as the capital is set to see a drop of up to nine degrees tomorrow.

The unsettled weather will not last more than a day, as a change in weather conditions and a gradual rise in temperature are expected as early as Sunday.
