A revealing video from the newspaper “Politis” brings to light yet another possible source of marine pollution in Limassol Bay.

The footage, recorded on August 27, shows work taking place at the site in question, with a crane reportedly attempting to move the pipeline.

This is a drainage pipe that originates from a building under construction, crosses the coastal boulevard, and continues toward the sea.

According to complaints raised at yesterday’s meeting, the point where the water discharges is at a distance that raises concerns, as it is located near Dasoudi Beach. The Mayor of Amathus asked the Department of the Environment to clarify whether this specific discharge has been authorized and, if so, under what conditions.

The Department of the Environment confirmed that a discharge permit had been issued, subject to specific conditions, and has been conducting an on-site investigation since yesterday.

At the same time, the Limassol Municipality presented the results of its own sampling at the meeting, which, according to the Municipality, were not positive.

The two mayors strongly criticized government agencies, calling for more effective inspections and concrete answers regarding the incidents of pollution that occur from time to time in the waters off Limassol.

As the president of the EOA noted, this is not linked to a single activity.

DISY MP George Karaiskakis, announced that he will request an ex officio investigation of the matter by the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment once Parliament resumes its sessions.

Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hatzimanoli pledged that the goal is to increase sampling, the use of drones and new technology for inspections and real-time data collection.
