Bilbao hasn't started the season in the best possible way, as it has suffered two losses in its first two LaLiga matches, but on-field performance isn’t the only problem the club has to deal with.
Tension has arisen within the team between the players and management, with the players staging a protest that caused a stir following the 2-0 loss to Barcelona at Camp Nou.
Specifically, the Athletic players decided not to speak to the media after the match, despite the fact that this is a standard requirement for clubs in the Spanish league.
Shortly before Edin Terzić’s press conference, the team’s press office informed reporters that the players would not be speaking, making it clear that this was their own decision and that it related to an internal club matter.
The players’ stance is reportedly a reaction to a series of decisions made by the management under John Urarte, the most recent of which involved the elimination of the six free tickets each player received for home games at San Mamés.
This decision appears to have caused intense discontent in the locker room, with the players opting to boycott the media as a means of pressuring management.
This development is also particularly significant from a financial standpoint, as players’ participation in press conferences and television appearances is linked to the financial bonuses that teams receive at the end of the season.
