Matchday 2 of the Premier League brought two completely different stories, but both featured dramatic finishes. Hull continued its incredible start, escaping from Coventry (0-1) with a goal in the 81st minute and improved to 2-0, with the unbeatable Tzolakis once again keeping a clean sheet with crucial saves.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth saw victory slip away at the very end. Everton pressed until the final moments, and in the 90’+1′ Tarkowski capitalized on a corner that wasn’t cleared properly, got on the end of the ball, and beat Petrovic to make it 1-1.
More specifically, Coventry came out strong in their first Premier League home game in 25 years and applied pressure in the first half-hour through Avonigi and Grimes. Hull held firm, and Tzolakis kept the team in the game with key saves, the best of which came in the 39th minute on a close-range shot by Avonigi.
In the second half, Hull picked up the pace. Mendy tried a long-range shot, Tzolakis hit the crossbar but kept going, while Sakamoto injected energy into Coventry. In the 74th minute, Milar missed a great chance.
In the 81st minute, Beloumi, despite being pulled back, delivered an excellent pass to set up Milar, who scored to make it 0-1. Hull went 2-for-2, climbed to the top of the table, and Tzolakis kept another clean sheet. And all of this took place in front of the newly promoted team’s owner and president, Atzun Ilitzali, who was in attendance at the stadium.
In the other 5:00 p.m. match, Petrovic was the star of the first half, making big saves against Armstrong and Barry. Scott opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a superb finish, following a play set up by Evanilson.
In the second half, Everton pressed again, but Petrovic kept the score at 1-0 with yet another great save on a shot by Barry. In the 81st minute, Pickford saved Everton on a low shot by Rayan, with Evanilson unable to score on the rebound.
In the 90’+1′, Bournemouth failed to clear a corner properly, the ball remained in the box, and Tarkowski pounced on the rebound to beat Petrovic, tying the score at 1-1. Everton snatched a point in the closing moments of a match that had seemed lost.
