Dimitris Mavropoulos is the victim of the tragedy that occurred at Cape Greco.

The well-known businessman was pulled dead from the stormy sea after becoming trapped in the wreckage of his boat, which sank due to severe weather.

The 77-year-old businessman from Limassol had been associated for decades with the Cyprus Rally and the history of motorsports.

According to an announcement by the National Search and Rescue Coordination Center (KSED), at 2:30 p.m. the National Search and Rescue Plan “NEARCHOS” was activated at 14:30 in the Agioi Anargyroi maritime area, at Cape Greco, with the aim of rescuing people in danger on three vessels.

Two of the three vessels were completely destroyed after running aground on rocks due to severe rough seas.

The unfortunate businessman had previously been reported missing, prompting a search operation to locate him. He was eventually found unconscious on the rocks and rescued by a National Guard helicopter. He was transported to the Famagusta General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The operation involved a helicopter from the Police Aviation Operations Unit, a helicopter from the National Guard’s 460th Search and Rescue Squadron, a patrol from the Famagusta Police Directorate, members of the Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) and the Famagusta Fire Station, as well as ambulances from the Ambulance Service.

A total of six people were rescued.

The first person was rescued by a patrol from the Famagusta Police Department and is in good health.

Search and Rescue helicopters rescued five more people. Of these, two are in good health and, after receiving first aid, were released.

Two other people were transported to Famagusta General Hospital for treatment.

The sixth person, the unfortunate businessman, was pulled unconscious from the water by a Search and Rescue helicopter and transported to the Famagusta General Hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.
