Speaking to reporters after the memorial service for the heroes Ionas Nikolaou and Kyriakos Kolokasis in Geri, the President of the Republic, when asked to comment on the reactions of air traffic controllers from both Cyprus and the EU regarding the ongoing violations of the Nicosia FIR, said “First, I would like to note that the air traffic controllers are doing an exceptional, professional job.

Our country oversees a large FIR—it is a major area control center—and air traffic controllers have increased responsibilities; and they always respond professionally despite the challenges—such as those we are referring to, which are being addressed specifically at the European level. Because these issues do not concern only the Republic of Cyprus; they concern flight safety and affect many European citizens. And I would like to note the professionalism with which air traffic controllers carry out their work.
I also had the opportunity to visit the new Center that we inaugurated last year; they’re doing a very good job, and we’re right there with them to tackle any challenges that arise.”
