A fatal traffic accident occurred on Sunday morning, claiming the life of Andreas Giorgakis, 80, from Limassol. Speaking at the scene of the accident, Limassol Traffic Police Chief Marios Charalambous said that at 11:30 a.m. today, an 80-year-old driver, “for reasons unknown at this time,” was parked in the emergency lane on the Limassol-Paphos highway, past the Avdimou exit.
According to the report, at some point the 80-year-old driver attempted to merge onto the highway, and under circumstances that are currently under investigation, a second car, which was traveling toward Paphos, collided with the elderly man’s car, resulting in a serious crash.
“As a result of the accident, the elderly man was trapped in his vehicle, and the Fire Department had to intervene to extricate him.”
The 80-year-old was transported to Limassol General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He added that a couple from Paphos was traveling in the second car; they were injured and are undergoing medical examinations. “At first glance, it appears that the woman, the passenger, has been more seriously injured, while her husband, the driver, has sustained more minor injuries,” Mr. Charalambous said. When asked, Mr. Charalambous noted that the injured are not in danger.
He also said that the 80-year-old was not wearing a seat belt. “This has been confirmed by the first responders at the scene. As for the cause of his injuries, these will be determined by the autopsy,” he said.
