The sinking of the Filo Jet passenger catamaran, which was operating the Kyrenia–Tasoucu route in Mersin, is dominating the front pages of Turkish newspapers, which are now focusing on the circumstances of the accident and potential liabilities. A common thread running through the reports is now the search for the causes of the tragedy: why the voyage took place, whether there were timely warnings, how the crew reacted, and whether the ship could have returned before capsizing.

“Hurriyet,” under the headline “A Tragedy That Unfolded Before Our Eyes,” publishes passenger testimonies stating that they had noticed the problem and warned the crew.

Sabah refers to a “tragedy of negligence on the ship,” while Nefes uses the particularly stark headline “Officially murder,” which is a journalistic characterization and not a conclusion of the investigation.

Aksam features passenger testimony under the headline “We Said We Should Turn Back, but They Didn’t Listen to Us,” while Sozcu focuses on the circumstances under which the catamaran began taking on water and subsequently capsized.

Türkey asks, “Why did it set sail in stormy weather?”, while reports mention a warning about adverse weather conditions prior to the trip.

Milliyet, under the headline “Tragedy Four Miles Out,” raises questions about the decision to set sail, the captain’s maneuvers, the attempt to return, and the technical condition of the ship. According to Milliet, the wreck lies at a depth of approximately 514 meters, a factor that is expected to complicate the technical investigation.

Yeni Safak focuses on the dramatic moments of the rescue in an article titled “A Battle for Life at Sea.”
